Frequently asked questions
Under Medicare guidelines, patients are eligible for hospice care if they have a terminal diagnosis with a life expectancy of six months or less, as certified by a physician. Eligibility is not a "one-time" decision; if a patient outlives the six-month period but remains terminally ill, care can be extended as long as the patient continues to show signs of decline. If you are unsure about eligibility, please call our office. We can discuss your situation over the phone and arrange for a clinical assessment in the comfort of your home.
Hospice is 100% covered by Medicare Part A and Medi-Cal. Most private insurance plans and HMOs also provide a comprehensive hospice benefit. This coverage typically includes all services, medications, and equipment related to the terminal illness, with little to no out-of-pocket cost to the family.
Yes. Choosing hospice is not a permanent decision. A patient or their legal representative has the right to "revoke" the hospice benefit at any time, for any reason—such as pursuing curative treatment or returning to a primary care physician for standard medical needs. You can also re-enroll later if eligibility requirements are still met.
No. Hospice is for anyone facing an advanced, life-limiting illness. Common non-cancer diagnoses include:End-stage heart disease (CHF), Dementia or Alzheimer’s, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or lung disease, Kidney or liver disease, Neurological conditions (ALS, Parkinson’s).
Hospice provides intermittent clinical visits, not 24-hour bedside caregiving. While our team manages the medical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of care, the daily "hands-on" caregiving is typically provided by family members, friends, or hired private caregivers. However, we are available by phone 24/7 for emergencies or questions.
